makyo: the illusions of objective reality that can occur during meditation.
PPRs artist development paradigm achieves fruition with Mixmaster Docs first
conceptual project, The Makyo EP. Written at various points in his career, each cut
represents a milestone in the Myrtle Beach minimalists quest for a signature sound
and the perceptual distortions that haunted him along the way.
What are you, a wuss? Drop the singles mindset already.
Mixmaster Docs journey begins with Makyo, a sparse cut evoking the spacious
technicality of Photeks classic Ni Ten Ichi Ryu in an edit-heavy cascade of broken
beats, pad swells, and deep, filtered bass.
Doc and PPR label A&R Sinistarr dive deep into motor city grit in Dirty 2010. Thick,
crunchy drums and airy sweeps drive the tune into a progressive Detroit techno
groove. A hailstorm of synthetic percussion, grungy bass, and shotgun shells awaits.
Ghostin pulls the listener into a dreamy lull as female vocals ring out over classic
breaks. The soul of the old skool comes alive with subtle melodies and dubby bass.
If this is too deep for you, go back to the kiddie pool.
Doc and labelmate Random Movement boost the cinematic tension on Saturated Fats,
an alien landscape of dissonant pads, pitch-bending bass rips, and jazzy stabs.
Delayed percussion and creepy vocal samples create a disturbing psychedelic prelude
to the two-step lurch of Shakedown. Stark minimalism with deep, moving subs.
Strike At The Wind ends the adventure with dense, atonal atmospheres, and ravey
leads over light percussion and textured bass. A dark, nightmarish jaunt in half-time. | | 2011-02-16 21:22:15 | | | Jo-s Ceilings (w/Anjelo Alonte) / Manipulation [PPRD009] | | Celebrations are in order as stateside drum & bass triple-threat Jo-s embarks on the
fifteenth year in his relentless devotion to mastery. After transcending the decks with
mathematical precision, Jo-s went on to conquer the studio. His 2002 release Firing
Pin, a mix CD of his original tunes, chronicles his early studio work in entirety.
Inspired by a voice (his own) while collaborating with Sinistarr in 2008, Jo-s has since
integrated his vocal talent into production and live performances. Metalheadz and
Soul:R were quick to leap on his vocal work with Lenzman if youve been sleeping,
now might be a good time to jump on the bandwagon.
Psst. Check this out. Cmon, dont be a SISSY.
Jo-s pairs up with L.A. musician Anjelo Alonte to bring you a song about urgency.
The track title is deceptive; while a well-placed plane can be oppressive, the sensuous
onslaught of Ceilings refuses to be bound. Upbeat pads give way to Alontes melodic
guitar work as soulful lead lines build into an evocative vocal groove. Progressive and
unapologetically musical, Ceilings will propel you to the stars beyond.
Hey, where do you think YOURE going?!
Youre not DONE yet.
Ceilings finds elegant counterpoint in the somber undertones of Manipulation. Low-key
pads hang like clouds over meaty drums, setting a perfect bed for melancholy leads
bathed in reverb. Jos smooth vocals infuse the groove with emotion as it drops into
driving breaks and an ascending bassline. This moody gem delivers a healthy dose of
ass-shake with every ounce of heartache! | | 2011-02-16 20:58:29 | | | Dave Shichman - Large Room / Underreported [PPRD008] | | New Yorks own Dave Shichman might not be a known name as a producer, but you definitely have heard of Driven AM, a North American DnB label, artist management and production company. You should know that he already has an ear for talent, and were glad that hes showcasing his own talent with this release for Peer Pressure Digital. Large Room touches down with a half-step vibe, driven (no pun intended) by some fierce double-bass. The drums sound damn-near live, as if a bass player and drummer rocked this in-studio for Dave to twist the knobs on. With Underreported, Dave blends the same zone from side-A with a much slyer bassline. If the sound of this release was to imagine an eerie, wicked live jazz x DnB number, he has succeeded on all fronts. And you succeed by supporting forward-thinking artists of this ilk. | | 2011-02-16 20:50:11 | | | Sinistarr Uptown / Blue Thumb [PPRD007] | | With a return to form, Peer Pressure Recordings is entering the next phase, both on wax and digitally. With lucky #7 in their Peer Pressure Digital series, Michigans own Sinistarr steps up for two solid cuts. Having gained respect in the form of releases on Hospital, Creative Source, Nu Directions, Offshore and many other labels, Sinistarr flexes his smooth flavors for the home team. A-side Uptown doesnt disappoint, with a warm bassline paired with some hypnotic keys. An additional melody is laced atop this groove, and really brings out the jazzy vibes in this refreshing tune. On the flipside, he pairs a throwback beat with some sexy guitars and an understated bass, showing that subtle chops to an existing formula can really unearth new possibilities. We hate to say we saw him first, but its good to know that the boys back in town.
